I have no apologies for the break since the last issue. One of the first things I said when I started this service, was that if no-one sent me anything to publish then the newsletter would not get produced. Well I have received very little since the last issue so hence the delay. There is a lesson in there for you! Anyway, welcome to this issue. With the wind blowing against the window at the moment and the promise of snow over this weekend, it seems as though the portable season is a long way away! That's part of the trouble of living at this northerly latitude! However, the contest season will soon be with us. Details and arrangements for the RSGB contests can be found in this newsletter. I think another big round of applause and gratitude can be given to Peter G3PHO for the thankless task of co-ordinating and planning the yearly calendar. Thanks Peter, I and many others appreciate this work. So what has this newsletter got install. Well I have the latest news from the G3WDG labs, news from the Dubus crew, contest and operating news plus much more. Just a reminder that the EMN website has recently been updated and the latest WDG info added. I don't apologise for this bias. The work that Charlie and Petra do for the microwave world in Europe (and a good part of the global remainder) is well known. His designs are very reproducible. The designs are perfect for newcomers to the hobby and deserve all the support I can give. I would also reminder other designers that I will give their equipment the same space, but I just don't seem to see or receive the same information as I do from Charlie. I am sure that other new designs and ideas do exist, so come on, lets see them. With that challenge thrown down, I will hand you over to the newsletter! I look forward to seeing and hearing from you all shortly. 73 Simon GM4PLM NEWS AND ITEMS OF INTEREST ========================== MICROWAVE ROUND TABLE (SOUTHERN) AT RAL - Geoff G3NAQ ----------------------------------------------------- This will take place on Sunday 25 April 1999, 10am to 5 pm. We apologise for the clash with a BATC event, but no other suitable date could be found. More information will be provided nearer the day, or contact G3NAQ, GW4LXO, or G0MJW. 73, Geoff. Microwave Contest Calendar 1999 - Peter Day G3PHO ------------------------------------------------- The full list of Microwave Committee contests, along with the complete rules, are now available on my "World Above 1000MHz" website. The URL for this is: http://freespace.virgin.net/p.day/ghz.htm ... just follow the directions on the menu page. This information will also appear in the Microwave Newsletter at the beginning of 1999 and the dates only should be published in RadCom's Microwave Column. Please note that these are the only valid rules for contests organised by the Microwave Committee. Other microwave contest rules, published elsewhere do NOT apply. The contest calendar also includes 1.2/2.3GHz contests organised by the RSGB VHF Committee. Rules for these appear in the October 1998 RadCom. The closing dates for Microwave Committee logs and the adjudicator's address is the one published with the rules. Please do not send logs into the P.O. Box number used for VHF committee contests! Please address and queries to me by email. 73 and all the very best for Christmas and the New Year.. Peter, G3PHO Adjudication of 10 GHz Trophy Contest Logs - Peter Day G3PHO ------------------------------------------------------------ As a result of recent discussions with RSGB's VHFCC, that committee has now taken over the adjudication of the 10GHz Trophy Contest logs, as of and including this year's event. All other Microwave Committee contests are unaffected and logs for those will continue to be sent to G4JNT. Since the 10GHz Trophy is an RSGB Trophy it was felt right that it should be administered the same as other RSGB Trophy contests, although the actual rules will continue to be set by the Microwave Committee. VHFCC will merely(?) look after adjudication and publishing of results and the award of the Trophy. From now on the Trophy rules will be published in RadCom. I have therefore reprinted the rules in a slightly different format to the one seen in the January Microwave Newsletter. They are still the same rules though! I'm attaching these, as a text file, to this email to keep you all fully informed. The change to notice is the new address for submission of logs. Please also note that since the GENERAL RULES for the RSGB VHF/UHF/SHF CONTESTS also apply, only paid up members of RSGB are eligible to enter and, indeed, operate. If you are a multi-operator station and change ops on 10GHz from time to time please make sure they are RSGB members! --------------------------- [From The Ed: I see what Peter means by this statement, but just a reminder that there is nothing to stop non-RSGB members being operational or taking part, but of course you will not be allowed to participate in a multi-operator station that is making an entry, if you are not an RSGB member; or make a personal entry. Don't let that stop people being operational on the bands just because they are not RSGB members.] --------------------------- RULES FOR THE 10GHz TROPHY CONTEST - 1999 1. The contest will take place between 1400GMT and 2200GMT on SATURDAY, 1st May, 1999 and will run, for part of the time, in parallel with the RSGB 432 up Contest. 2. The General RSGB Rules for VHF/UHF/SHFContests 1999 (See RSGB Contesting Guide as published in Radcom, October1998) will also apply unless stated otherwise below. 3. There is one section only - Open Operators may enter as home station or portable (either mixed or separately), single or multi-operator. 4. Scoring will be on a 1 point per km basis. One way contacts score half points. One way or cross band contacts score for the full multipliers listed below. Such contacts must be clearly marked. 5. Contest exchanges on the microwave band consist of RS(T) + serial number (starting at 001). In addition the six (or eight) figure QTH LOCATOR must be exchanged either via the microwave band or on the talkback frequency. Where the LOCATOR is not known, a full six figure National Grid Reference (UK only) must be provided. 6. A multiplier based on the number of different LOCATOR SQUARES (eq IO81, JO02, etc) plus COUNTRIES worked will apply to the final raw distance points score. Therefore the final score =(total points per km) X (number of squares + countries ) 7. Contestants are asked to make sure their entries have been scored correctly and that all relevant multipliers have been claimed. Do not expect the adjudicator to do this for you! 8. All entries should include an appropriate summary/cover sheet (either an RSGB VHF-UHF type or a personal one) showing : Title of contest, name(s) of operator(s), location(s) of station, callsign used, band score, multipliers, final claimed score. The sheet should also detail equipment used, particularly the power output, antenna and receiver for both the microwave band and the talkback. A separate list should be attached showing, by callsign , serial number and Locator and/or country, each new multiplier claimed. 9. Log entries may be submitted directly on paper, using standard RSGB VHF Contest sheets or self-prepared contest sheets or on a 3.5 inch diskette (IBM PC format), the latter using any of the acceptable file formats listed in the General Rules on page 55 of the October 1998 RadCom or the G4JNT microwave contest log format. Please read the General RSGB VHF/UHF/SHF rules for further guidance on log submission formats. The address for all 10GHz trophy logs is: PO Box 2399, Reading, RG7 4FB 9. Awards: The RSGB 10GHz Trophy will be awarded to the leading station ALL LOGS SHOULD BE SENT TO THE CONTEST ADJUDICATOR, POSTMARKED OR EMAILED NOT LESS THAN 16 DAYS OF THE END OF THE CONTEST...ie Tuesday, 18 May 1999. Late entries will be acknowledged but not used in the final ranking. The address for all 10GHz trophy logs is: PO Box 2399, Reading, RG7 4FB Component Follow-Up - Trevor Gale --------------------------------- Greetings Simon. Just read the latest newsletter. In same, Clive G0PPO mentions that the NE602 double-balanced mixer/RF/osc isn't being made any more, and that he cannot come across the NE604 low-power FM IF chip. I am at present building a tunable I.F. of my own design to cover various microwave converter outputs (rather than use one of my Jap boxes which haven't got the features I want) and I indeed use the NE602 in several places (1st converter, IF-shift/VBT unit, 2nd converter and the SSB demodulator). It's a wonderfully useful device and I would expect other readers to be using it as well. Local to me, this device (from Signetics and/or from Philips) is easily available at a price of 6.5 Dutch guilders, about 2 pounds 17 pence. Regarding the NE604, this is replaced by the better-trimmed NE614, and is also available at my local electronics shop at 11.9 Dutch guilders, a pin-for-pin replacement I am told, but check your Signetics data book. Incidentally, the NE602 also has a follow-up in the form of, you guessed it, the NE612. I hope this is useful information to other constructors who like to get what they need using a soldering iron rather than a cheque-book 8*). Best regards & 73's, -- F.C. This would normally appear in the Microwave Newsletter but I am emailing direct so that these items might be delivered to the purchasers at Sandown and thereby save me a lot of messing about! Having had relatively little experience of TWTs I can only furnish the info below. Some of you may have more... if so please let me know. Yesterday I collected a number of TWTs from a semi local friend who is shortly moving QTH. He has asked me to handle the disposal of the following items: If you are interested in any of them I can bring them to Sandown on 21 Feb. Please only ask me to do this if you have a keen interest, as my car was quite full yesterday and my Sandown trip will involve much other gear as well! 2 @ English Electric Type 4134NYT2 C band WG15 in/out. 10 watts pSat (I believe), complete with excellent 19 inch rack fully enclosed mains PSUs. (The psus are actually 50VAC i/p but a 230/50 tranny is included). Should be OK for 5.7GHz. All in fb condition. 1@ GEC TWC5 with WG14 in/out. 5 watt o/p for 1.5mW drive. 5.9-6.4GHz (should work on 5.7). Older and larger than the EE types but still perfectly OK for home station. GEC mains PSU included. I also have some other (*very* QRO) TWTs available but these are being considered by another party. If they dont want them I will put them on the general list! I would prefer to deliver any of these to you via the Sandown meeting as they are obviously very heavy items to post and would require specialised packaging to avoid damage. Otherwise it's buyer collect or wait until RAL roundtable in April! Prices... well, the local friend has a bottom price but has asked me to get the best offers...so it's over to you! You might be pleasantly surprised! They may be worth buying for the PSUs alone. DUBUS archives can also now be found on the web via the DUBUS UK page at Roger Blackwell's site. The url for this is www.marsport.demon.co.uk I tried both sites but was unsuccessful with the DUBUS archives which reported a file error when read with my Adobe Acrobat 3 - maybe someone else can prove they work ok. The HYPER articles are alittle on the large size and in French, but this does not detract from their usefulness! Both organisations should be congratulated on letting their past issues be available for retrieval via the web. 73 Simon GM4PLM Band and Operating Reports -------------------------- F6DRO, Dom reports; I'm still quite active on 6 and 3cm bands.Got some good tropo openings in august as far as IN88 and worked F1GHB on 6 and 3cm for best DX untill now on these bands.Worked F6ETI/IN87 F6ETZ/IN97 during the same opening.I made a test with G3GNR and heard traces from him but unfortunately no QSO yet(I believe he heard me on 3cm). I got several days of good tropo around december 8th but microwave conditions have been locked to IN94,booming signal on the 23cm beacon,no way to hear a G beacon on 1296 while the GB3VHF one was 569 on 144,I was really expecting to work my first G on 3cm but no way!I worked F6DKW and F5HRY both from JN18,as well as F6APE/IN97 all 59 on 3cm during that opening. Please note I have bad TVI problems on 2m and 70cm so the only way to reach me during good openings is on 23cm directly (around 1296210) or telephone at 33561812138. 24Ghz is already under construction. 73's Dom/F6DRO G3NAQ, Geoff reports; I have finally finished my 23 cm transverter. Nominally 10W it manages 7.5W to a 23 ele F9FT at 20 m asl via 35 m of LDF4-50. No other visible emissions on the HP spec analyser, but I had to work for that! The I.F. is the once-ubiquitous IC202S. During the last cumulative I worked 15 stations, the futhest being 1O93 Derbyshire. A 2C39A PA is already well on the way, as is a mast head pre-amp. Seasons Greetings, and keep up the Good Work! Geoff G3NAQ. G4JMG, Julian reports; Please could you include this item in your excellant news letter. At Martlsham Heath round table last year I was please4d to find that my 10 GHz QRP transverter could actually transmit and could recieve the site beacon. I would now like to run some live tests to see if the system will work out in the field. Is there any body in the North West London area who has some working equipment that could spare a few hours to do some tests? I can run about 16 mW into a 30 cM dish on either SSB,CW or FM. I have also built the 10 GHz source which is featured in the RSGB Micro Wave book.I cannot get it go on 10 GHz even though the the crystal is working. Any suggestions or alternative designs? I will also hopefully be on 13 cM this spring so I will be looking to run some QRP tests. Please reply to jmg@maxwell.ph.kcl,ac.uk Julian G4ZOD OH2AUE, Michael reports; I have been pretty busy with work and other secondary issues, but our gang DID find the time to use last Sunday for testing 10 GHz EME from OH2AXH after a couple of years of low EME activity on this band. This time we used a TWTA for the final ( ran it at about 35 W out, had some difficulty with temperature variation playing havoc with the bias - the temperature was around -10 degrees C at the time and snowing + pretty windy ). The LNA was a NE32584C P-HEMT preamp design from DB6NT. OM Pertti also barely hears his echoes with his 4.5 m ( 6.4 m outer ring included, but only inner illuminated ) dish and the meagre 4 W from the SSPA ( a Fujitsu FLM0910-4C ) ! The cold sky/ground noise difference is approx. 4 dB ( heavy overcast ) and the sun noise is in the order of 15 dB. Moon noise is around 1 dB ( discernible on the S-meter ). OH2AXH still has a pointing problem and manual tracking ( ! ). SM4DHN, Lars-Bertil heard ours sigs very well, but just at the beginning of the sked something started to go wrong as we could not hear our own echoes any more, or see the lunar noise either: the preamp was dead. Luckily I have some NE32584C devices still left ( I have the same in my 3.4 and 5.7 GHz LNA's ). This failure will need more investigation, but I can only believe that the microwave relay is leaking during transition from R to T. I will verify this a.s.a.p. but I cannot imagine what else could have caused the failure ( shorted gate on the P-HEMT ). I had the TWTA protected with a circulator + high power load and directional coupler for forward/reverse power measurement... Oh, and I have also been enjoying the PI6ALK ATV repeater the club is relaying over Eutelsat -13 degrees using MPEG-2 ! Their homepage site: http://www.tss-telecom.nl/pi6alk I am using a 90 cm offset dish, 0.7 dB dualband digital-compatible stable LNA and a Hyundai DVB MPEG-2/Analalogue "open" receiver. Fun stuff !
