Seattle Marathon Volunteers Needed

by Bob Calkins, WA7NUU, wa7nuu@halycon.com
It's time once again, even a little past time, to start getting organized for the 1997 Seattle Marathon. For those of you who don't know me, my name's Bob Calkins, and Ed Mitchell is helping me break in as the new Ham Coordinator for this event. I ran in the half-marathon a few years ago before a heel spur ended my running career. Since then I've volunteered as a ham in various slots.

(Editor's note: I am running this special request for volunteers prominently at Ham Radio Online because I coordinated the Seattle Marathon communications in 1995 and 1996. This is a special event for us. Please don't send expect us to request volunteers for other events here on the front page of Ham Radio Online!)

I hope many (most) (all) of you who have volunteered in years past will be able to return in 1997. Your experience will be invaluable, especially with my being a rookie coordinator. The date is Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997.

If you haven't volunteered before it can be very cold, very wet, and VERY satisfying. There are thousands of runners from all over the country giving it their all. Making the race go smoothly for them, and being there in case of emergency, is a worthwhile endeavor.

Ham participation has lagged in recent years, and we really need you. We have solid agreement from the Marathon Association that the amateur radio resource will be used efficiently and effectively. You can be sure that your time and talents will not be wasted.

But even with streamlining of assignments we still need lots of folks. If you're available on Nov. 29, please let me know ASAP. If you're a returning volunteer, and want to work a specific assignment, please say so. A lot of the assignments from previous years won't even exist, but we'll certainly try to get you what you want.

You can let me know you're available via:
Internet: wa7nuu@halcyon.com
Packet: WA7NUU@N7EQZ.#NWWA.WA.USA.NOAM.
Telephone: 425-745-4187

Thanks again, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Bob Calkins, WA7NUU
1997 Seattle Marathon Ham Coordinator
