Amateur Radio Highaltitude Balloonsby Nathan Jhonson, KC7JHO, kc7jho@flinthills.comThe Kansas Near Space Project will launch its next near space capsule (mission 97C) on October 18, 1997 at 7:00 am. Should high winds, rain, or 100% cloud cover prevent the launch, it will be rescheduled for the following weekend. Preflight assembly and testing will be performed the day before the launch at the Balloon Launch Facility (BLF) starting at 6:00 pm. The capsule for this flight will be the Asimov II. A manifest for this flight follows.
The goal of the Kansas NSP is to involve students and the public in amateur
space science. While
flights are weight constrained, individuals are invited to design
experiments that investigate the
upper atmosphere, perform remote viewing, or test technological designs.
Typical flights last
approximately three hours and land 80 miles from the launch site. Recovery
teams using Global
Positioning System (GPS) receivers follow after the capsule and record
flight data.
