Birmingham, Alabama, author Don Keith, N4KC, will have his second major novel published as a hardback original by St. Martin's Press late this year. Entitled "Wizard of the Wind", it is set in the world of radio broadcasting, but has elements pertaining to amateur radio also. The book tells the story of a young man who is fascinated by the magic of radio when he first hears distant signals and early rock and roll music on an old upright Zenith radio. He later begins a career as a disk jockey, sees the promise of FM, and begins to build an empire of stations. But along the way, he loses sight of the magic that drew him to broadcasting in the first place and almost loses all he has created as well as those he loves most.
One of the principal characters in the book is a ham radio operator, and he uses old-fahioned "fox hunting" techniques to help track the "bad guys" in a crucial part of the book's narrative.
Keith spent over twenty years in radio as on-air personality, manager, owner and consultant, and currently works with a company which develops and markets computer software for the broadcast industry. He has been a licensed ham since 1962 and currently holds the Amateur Extra class F.C.C. license. He is a former officer in the Birmingham Amateur Radio Club and was its first Public Information Officer. He is most active on 20-meter CW and 2-meter FM.
N4KC's first novel, "The Forever Season", was also published by St. Martin's Press, and continues to enjoy tremendous commercial and critical success. The trade paperback edition of that book will be released in late August.
