14 Year Old Japanese Sailor has Not Been Heard From Since 18 August

www.hamradio.online.com grants automatic reprint permission for this story without restriction. Please distribute as appropriate.

Background

14 year old Subaru Takahashi is making a solo crossing of the Pacific Ocean from Japan to the United States - in a 30 foot yacht. You can read of his story at 14 Year Old Japanese Boy is Sailing Solo Pacific Crossing.

Unfortunately, no one has made radio contact with him since August 18th. He reportedly had trouble earlier with a satellite transceiver and was then relying solely on ham radio. After crossing the International date line, and due to the poor HF propagation conditions, his signals became too weak to monitor in Japan. At this time, he has not been heard from in three weeks. If you live on the West Coast of North America or in Hawaii, your assistance is urgently requested to help re-establish radio contact with Subaru.

How To Contact Subaru

By Masa Sakamoto, KN6RJ, kn6rj@interserv.com

I have been trying to make contact with Subaru since August 18, 1996. Unfortunately, no one has made contact with him since 18 August 1996. He may have equipment problems with his transceiver or its antenna.

The following is the contact schedule Subaru has been using:

Subaru's call sign: JH0YCG

Net Frequency: 21.437 MHz

Net Schedule
JST 07:00 - 08:00 Seagull Net (GMT 2200 - 2300)
JST 12:20 - 13:00 Okera Net (GMT 0320 - 0400)
JST 20:00 - 20:30 Okera Net (GMT 1100 - 1130)
Note: JST to GMT conversion performed by Ham Radio Online and unverified

I am calling him 10 minutes before each net starts. Please watch first if he is calling back. If you can hear him and if I can not copy him, call him and ask his location and condition.

Unfortunately, he can not use 14MHz band due to his limited license. He has two generators and ICOM portable transceiver. The antenna is not known.
