Ham Radio Mailing Lists

by John Mackey, KA0SSF, Beaverton1@stream.com
The Internet provides a wealth of information resources. Some are available through electronic mail as email distribution lists on various topics. The list below was passed along to one of the lists that we subscribe to, and appears to have originated with N9UKX. We think this list originated at a web site somewhere. If you know more about where this list came from, please let us know.

Usually, you "subscribe" to a mailing list by sending an email message to the indicated email address, and placing information in the subject or body of the message indicating that you wish to subscribe to that mailing list. Once subscribed, messages will start to distribute to you. For example, to subscribe to the cq-contest mailing list, send an email message TO: cq-contest-request@tgv.com and then in the body of the message, type:
SUBSCRIBE

Other email systems may require you to select which email list you wish to subscribe to. Here's an example, using the ARRL's list service. Send email TO: listserv@netcom.com and in the message body, write:
subscribe arrl-nediv-list

To send a message to an email list for distribution to all members, post your message to the address given below.

Some mailing lists are one-way only - this means that the list owner uses the list to distribute bulletins. For example, the ARRL sends bulletin messages to those who are subscribed to the list.

Many mailing lists are two-way. In a two-way list, you can send email to the distribution list's email "reflector". Anything sent to the email reflector is bounced back to everyone on the email list. These lists are used for open announcements and discussions.

Another type of mailing list is tied into the Usenet newsgroups. Messages placed in a news group are automatically distributed to the email distribution list (and vice versa).

Be forewarned that some email distribution lists generate a lot of email! We have seen lists that generate 100 message a day. If you subscribe to a few of these, you will never have time to get anything else done in life as you become inundated with email.

Radio's with Tubes
Purpose:An active mailing list devoted to the discussion of pre-1970s vintage communications equipment, including amateur radio receivers, transmitters, microphones, Morse Code keys, accessories, certain military radio equipment, etc. Vacuum tube or "Fire-bottle" technology is the principal qualifier in determining the equipment's acceptability for discussion. Wanted and items for sale are posted. Expect to find classic examples of radio folk known as "Old Farts"," Wily Curmudgeons", and others of their ilk. Newcomers are welcome, but "flash-in-the-pan" types with nothing to contribute are discouraged. Flames are not welcome - this list has one of the highest signal-to-noise ratios in the Internet and we want to keep it this way. A definite interest in and commitment to the preservation, restoration and operation of vintage radio equipment is essential. A FAQ and daily digest format are available as well as a Boatanchor archives is maintained at another site. You will find the accumulated knowledge and wisdom accumulated here if you have questions about vintage radio operation, maintenance, restoration or history.
