Kon na mauri & Greetings! The following is information regarding our HOMECOMING TRIP 1997 to the very remote Banaba Island in the Central Pacific.
The Banaban's homeland island Banaba or Ocean Island has suffered from one of the greatest environmental disasters this century after 80 years of phosphate mining, and our society holds concerns over the amount of cadmium and other heavy metal contamination that could be affecting the reefs and food-chain. The story of the Banbans' plight and much more information is available on our Web Page.
We are also keen to hear from scientists and researchers with an interest in any of the following: Pacific islands, environmental science, anthropology, Pacific war history, postal history, geology, marine and ocean science, speleology, Botany and associated fields.
Our ship will be stopping over in other islands on the voyage that will commence and finish from Fiji. Other ports of call are Rabi Island (Banaban's new island off Fiji), Funafuti, Tarawa, Nauru and Rotuma. You will find all the details on our HOMECOMING TRIP 1997 on our Banaban Web Page under the heading of 'Up-coming Events' on our main Notice Board and discussion on Rehabilitation Ideas under 'Environmental Issues' at http://www.ion.com.au/~banaban
Please don't hestitate to contact me if you would like any further information.
Kind regards & ti akabo!
