Progress Report From DXpedition to Yangon, Myanmar

by Ray Gerrard, G3NOM, tayno@ibm.net

This DXpedition to Yangon, Myanmar is progressing on schedule (25th October to 4th November 1996.)

The organiser is Ray G3NOM on behalf of the JA1UT group. JA1UT himself is preparing another team for the 5T5 Mauritania DX Pedition linked to the Paris-Dakar Internation Motor Rally. (To run from 6 - 16th Nov 96).

The call-sign XY1U was used in the CQ WW SSB contest, and for Satellite and RTTY contacts. The callsign XY1U is being used by the Japanese operators JA1CDG (Ken), JA8RUZ(Toshi), and JP1TRJ(Hiro). QSLs for QSOs under this call-sign should go to JA8RUZ CBA.

XY1HT is being used by the European operators G3NOM and LA7JO. This time the QSLs should go to LA7JO CBA.

The operation is taking place from a government building in the city centre, and unfortunately a high noise level is again being experienced. Last night Stig LA7JO ran out a short Beveridge antenna on the roof top, and this resulted in much better reception on 80m. We are using separate transmit and receive antennas due to the high noise level. We are working on this noise problem with a view to improving things for the upcoming weekend.

A reminder that the upcoming DXPedition XZ1N, 16th November onwards, will have specialists to deal with the LF bands, including 160m. So although we will try our best, please bear in mind that there should be large safety net waiting.

The antennas in use are a Create 3/4 element tribander for 28/21/14, A Butternut HF6V, an 80m inverted vee, and loops for WARC bands. Rigs are FT890, IC735, IC706, TL922, FLl200, AL84.
