To Be a Ham

by Steven Myers, WB7SON, Steven_Myers_at_SMTP_stevenm@harborside.com

I am often asked what it is like to be a ham. I have written a poem to answer that question.

You have to earn the privilege to be
In the Amateur Radio fraternity
This is what you should realize
It's not a handout, gift, of prize
It takes some work I cannot deny
To say it is simple would be a lie
You have to study electronics; it's true
Just learn the basics, not hard to do
Plus Morse code is something you'll learn
If a ham license is what you'd like to earn
The code can be fun, or an agony
The choice is yours, which one will it be?
        Learning propagation and operating skill
Are goals that you should try to fulfil
        You should have some familiarly
With Amateur's own terminology
        The rules and regulations show
The legalities that hams should know
To know these things surely will make
The F.C.C. test, "a piece of cake"
Passing the test gives the privilege to be
In the Amateur Radio fraternity
Join in the pleasure, enjoy all the fun
It's time for excitement, the work is all done
A thousand watts are in your control
Now that you have reached your goal
Use A.M., F.M., or single side band
Teletype, satellites and repeaters, you can!
In emergency work hams are always around
Because their communication is the best to be found
Electronic projects are a whole lot of fun
And so are the contests, just enter one
A million minds unique and neat
Are on the air, that you can meet
        Travel the world, go anywhere
Over radio waves in your own easy chair
All this and more, are for you and me
In the Amateur Radio fraternity
