Where is Ham Radio Going?By Laird M. Wilcox lwilcox3@ix.netcom.com.I'm a relatively new ham, but I can see plainly the irony of antiquated ham radio practices in an era of rapidly advancing technology. Perhaps the best example of this is the retention of the morse code for ham licensing. The "code" is a 19th century invention that has long outlived its usefulness and serves primarily as a barrier to the growth of ham radio. The "no-code tech" license did much to alleviate this, but the problem still exists. Until the ham community faces this, it will serve as a major impediment our hobby. |
